Jean Hulliberger-Brorby
Jean Hulliberger-Brorby has been awarded February 2004 and March 2010 Artist of the Month by the Branch County Art Guild. Jean is a long time member of the guild, and has served in guild offices, including President.
Born into an artistic family, art was a part of her life as a child. She was "always surrounded by
people creating something beautiful." Considering herself "self taught", she has also learned
from accredited artists' workshops as well as from her artist family. Brorby also learned
though critiques of her art.
Versatile, her media include oil, acrylic, watercolor, china paint, overglazing in the fields of
porcelain and clays, pencil drawing, and the fine crafts of woodworking, sewing costumes and
puppets. Her favorite subjects are animals, landscapes, portraits, flowers, and seascapes. She has
painted scenery and props and enjoys calligraphy, baskets weaving with pine, willow and reeds,
and working with earthenware. "I had a business that was named "Creative Clays" and I taught
porcelain sculpting, china painting, and many other techniques," Jean states. Versatile in her
interests as well as media, Brorby has also taught 4H beginning art classes and piano and
guitar music classes and craft classes through the years.
Brorby considers her family, friends, and other artists her greatest supporters.
Brorby states what she most enjoys in creating artwork is "the many moods, sometimes
relaxing, sometimes exciting, challenging, and stimulating."
Jean has made "precious friends in the Guild" and likes the "fellowship, the motivation, and
helping each other see the same subject from a different point of view and from different eyes
that may be better in that subject than you are could help improve it. As an example, a person
who is a hunter would know more about wildlife than I and would have a better eye to show
me what could be improved. I may or may not use the information but I still welcome it. I love
to learn."
Brorby describes herself as being "visual" and
"curious" and likes to travel, all of which helps in the art field. "My art is governed by space,
time and location." Much of Jean's inspiration is from the natural world.
"I like to record things....a mountain, a beautiful flower.......the beauty of God's creation.
She has been an inspiration to many and is always encouraging others. Her goal is to keep the art's alive in Branch County and keep the art guild going for many generations to come
