2004 News:
September couldn't be better, with a beautiful day of plein air painting at the scenic Leonadis Mill. Each artist did their unique interpretation of one of the beautiful and historical landmarks. Bev Tippman, Evelyn Cross and Gloria Norris painted the waterfalls, Donna Good, Ruth Bidwell, Dorothy Cross, Janice Crum, Eleanor Shaw, Mary Blosser, and Kathryn Barnes painted the mill. The guild artists used watercolors, oils, and acrylics. Sue Miller and other guests also painted with the group. Tourists and visitors wandered through the mill park, talking to the artists and admiring the artworks. A good time was enjoyed by all. Kathryn Barnes sold her painting to a couple of interested tourists at the park. Later a professional photographer came to photograph the scenic area. Eleanor Shaw's husband also photographed the mill, getting some good reference photos for her to work from in her studio.
Mary Blosser has been a gracious host to the weekly guild painting sessions. Four or more guild members meet once a week to paint together. It has been an interesting and invigorating experience for the participants.
The guild welcomes new member, Janice Crum, an avid artist who creates beautiful watercolor scenes and florals.
The guild members have been invited to the monthly meetings at the Battle Creek Art Center, each 1st Monday of the month, with the exception of Sept, which will be on the second Monday due to the holiday. Time is 6:30. Instruction and social events are planned.
The art guild meetings held in the First Baptist Church have been well attended. Guest artists, including Bill Williams, graciously gave of their time to instruct the guild members in techniques of various media. Mr. Williams also invited the guild to his open house art show. He is known for his realistic portraits and classical still life artwork.
The first meeting of 2004 was held March 4. After a class in perspective theory by Susan Miller, the guild minutes and meeting was held. New 2004 booklets were handed out, and dues were collected.
The art auction at the Coldwater Country Club was reported to be a success, with money raised for children's programs.
Refreshments were served, and members will volunteer for refreshments at future meetings it was decided.
Kathryn Barnes suggested an art fair this summer by guild members and Bev Tippman who is on the art center committee, will follow up on it. The community is working on an art center which is culturally needed.
Video tapes will continue at $3.00 a month rental. The money will go toward purchasing more tapes for the art library. New activites were mentioned for 2004.

2003 News:
The harvest supper Thursday, Nov.13 at 6pm was a great success. The food was excellent, members bringing their specialties. Christmas gifts were exchanged, and some guests attended, including Molly Unick, a guild member from years ago. The video library has grown, and videos will be available at Voss Art Supplies through March when the guild meetings will begin again. New officers were elected for 2004: Evelyn Cross, President, Bev Tippman, Vice-president, Gloria Norris, Secretary, and Dorothy Cross,Treasurer. The 2004 book design contest was won by Kathryn Barnes for her palette design.
The Guild is having a card shower for members who are ill. Members are requested to send cards to the members "under the weather".
We will miss our friend, Lauree Manzer, who passed away November 3, in her home from a long illness. If you have not done so, please take time to visit her homepage at this website. She was a courageous and gentle spirit, who will be missed by all. She recorded forgotten treasures in her art....a meadow lost to developers, a bridge, house, or tree no longer there. Lauree was sensitive and a beautiful person who had many friends in the guild. She painted with passion and gentleness.
A tragedy has befallen the Evelyn Cross family who barely made it out of their burning home with their lives when their home was hit by lightning October 25. The guild is had a shower for the family November 4 at 7 pm at the Masonic Temple in Sherwood. Many friends of the Cross family came. Good fellowship was shared, and the Crosses were given many nice gifts, as well as the message the community is thankful their lives were spared.
The October meeting was interesting. Members learned about photography and photo-tinting. A committee was appointed to seek nominations for officers for 2004. Voting will be held at the next meeting. The cover booklet contest will also be held at the November meeting.
Guild members captured an impressive number of ribbons at the art exhibit of the Branch County art fair. 42 ribbons included 3 best of show and 3 honorable mentions.
The September meeting and plein air painting day at Bev Tippman's lake home was well attended. The quality of light and Bev's hospitality made for a wonderful day.
Due to stormy weather, the August meeting was postponed. The following week, guild members met at the home of Adabelle Hill for a lesson in watercolor painting. It was interesting to see how Mrs. Hill had her studio set up, and members produced various watercolor paintings, some using that media for the first time.
The May guild meeting featured Susan Miller with live model drawing. The artwork and teaching of Susan and the artistry of the model was an inspiration to all present. Some of the lesson is included in "art tips" on the main index page of this website which is near the bottom of that homepage. Gallery 3 has been added to with the art of Dorothy Cross and Mary Blosser and Gallery 4 has been added with the addition of art by Estelle Fisher, Vera Luce, Gloria Norris, and Rosie Chard. Access to the art galleries is via the Gallery Gate link.
The artist reception at the Stone's Throw Gallery for the art guild exhibit Saturday April 12 was a huge success. Gourmet food, conversation, and the efforts of the gallery to showcase guild artists was exceptional. The exhibit brought in many newcomers to the gallery. Some of the art was retained for sale by the Stone's Throw and can be viewed during gallery hours in Tekonsha Wed-Fri 10am-5pm, Sat-Sun 9am-3pm.
Bill Williams gave an excellent class in oil painting at the April meeting. The class was well attended. Guild members are asked to help with a request for patriotic paintings for display in downtown Coldwater in July. Artworks are to be brought to the June guild meeting.
The website has been updated.
New features include website navigation, and addition of the downloadable file for the artist of the month form to fill out if you have not already done so. It is listed on the index/home page, or you can get it (free of course) by clicking here:

greenwoodsart@msn.com for consideration. Kathy also needs photos of your artwork. Please label each on the back or with a note, information including the title, medium, and size of the artwork. Vera Luce and Estelle Fisher were awarded Honorary Lifetime Membership Awards in 2003. New and exciting activities have been planned this year.
Tri-County Art planning committees have invited guild members. The monthly meetings are held at the Open Door Gallery in Sturgis. The Open Door is also taking juried applications for new members. Phone: 269 659 9977 for more info.
Email mbenne@voyager.net if you would like to be on the mailing list for the Open Door gallery.
2002 News:
The Art Guild has been told that the city of Coldwater is planning on creating an art center, and that it will be using one of the available downtown buildings.
The guild received a grant for $200 because of the efforts of Bev Tippman, Gloria Norris, and Evelyn Cross, who painted a mural in the extension office building (the old jail on Pearl Street that was renovated, next to the courthouse). The hour when the office is open to view the mural are Monday to Friday, 9 to 5. The grant will be used to purchase videos for guild members to share,a library of instructional educational art videos.
Two of the paintings of Peg Voss were stolen from the exhibit at the Grahl Center. Surveillance cameras did not cover the alcove where the artwork was stolen from. That area will no longer be used for exhibit. If anyone knows of who stole the artworks, please contact the Guild.
Mike Hillyer has been commissioned to do portraits of each family member of a local Doctor's family.
On September 11, 2002, Mike donated a portrait he did of a firefighter to the local firefighters and police departments in a memorial ceremony in Coldwater.
Eleanor Shaw has sold many paintings to a local art patron who loves Mrs. Shaw's beautiful florals.
Kathryn Barnes had her first major Internet sale....selling 2 original paintings to a collector in New Mexico. She also has completed the illustrations for 2 children's books, including the covers designs, which are part of a series of historical novels.
Deborah Morris A-ced her finals, scoring a 3.88 GPA in art. She is on her way to her goal of being an art teacher and helping kids.
Lauree Manzer received an honorable letter of recognition from her Congressmen for her historical artwork, saying that she is an inspiration!
Rosie Chard has been awarded the honor of being the Guild's First Honorary Lifetime Member.
Deep sympathy is expressed to the family of Donna McNitt, a friend and longtime guild member
